Kashi Vishwanath Temple – Guptkashi

Kashi Vishwanath Temple – Guptkashi

The ancient Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Guptkashi is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered the spiritual twin of Kashi (Varanasi). It is believed that Lord Shiva hid here after blessing the Pandavas, giving the town its name "Gupt" (hidden) Kashi. The temple also houses a rare Ardhanarishvara (half Shiva, half Parvati) idol.

Kalimath Temple

Kalimath Temple

Kalimath Temple is one of the 108 Shakti Peeths, dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is believed that after slaying the demon Raktabeej, Goddess Kali went underground here, and her divine energy is worshipped beneath the temple floor.

Frequently asked questions

Planning a family trip? Here's what guests ask us most.

How far is Shree Kedarlingam from Kedarnath?
We are in Guptkashi on the Kedarnath route. It is about 30 km by road from Guptkashi to Sonprayag, and a further 5 km to Gaurikund, from where the roughly 16 km trek to Kedarnath begins. Our team can help arrange a taxi to Sonprayag.
What is the best time to visit Kedarnath?
The Kedarnath temple is usually open from late April or early May until Bhai Dooj in November. May–June and September–October offer the most pleasant weather. The monsoon months (July–August) can bring landslides and travel delays.
How long is the Kedarnath trek and how difficult is it?
The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 16–18 km and most pilgrims complete it in 6–8 hours, depending on fitness. The climb is steady but manageable; we suggest an early start, an overnight halt with us in Guptkashi beforehand to acclimatise, and a slow, steady pace.
What should I carry for the Kedarnath trek?
Pack warm layers and a windproof jacket (it stays cold even in summer), a raincoat or poncho, comfortable trekking shoes with good grip, a walking stick, a cap and gloves, sunscreen, a basic first-aid kit, any personal medicines, a power bank, and some cash. Carry your ID and Char Dham Yatra registration. Travel light — porters and ponies are available at Gaurikund.
Are ponies, palki or doli available for the Kedarnath trek?
Yes. Ponies (ghodas), palki and doli services are available at Gaurikund for those who prefer not to walk the full route, which is helpful for elderly pilgrims and children. We can advise you on current rates and help arrange them.
What are the nearby attractions and places to visit around Shree Kedarlingam?
Guptkashi and the surrounding Garhwal region are rich with temples and Himalayan beauty. Close by you can visit the Kashi Vishwanath and Ardhanareshwar temples in Guptkashi, Ukhimath (the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath), and the Kali Math Shakti Peeth. A little further are Triyuginarayan (the legendary wedding site of Shiva and Parvati), Chopta — often called 'mini Switzerland' — and the Tungnath temple, the world's highest Shiva temple, with the Deoria Tal lake and Kartik Swami temple making memorable day trips. Our team is happy to plan an itinerary and arrange a taxi.
How do I reach Guptkashi?
The nearest railway station is Rishikesh and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant (Dehradun). From there Guptkashi is roughly a 7–8 hour drive via Rudraprayag. We can help arrange a taxi or guide you on shared cabs and buses.
Do you help with Kedarnath yatra registration or helicopter booking?
Yes. Our team is happy to guide you on the mandatory Char Dham Yatra registration and share current information on helicopter services from nearby helipads. Call or WhatsApp us and we will help you plan.
What are your check-in and check-out times?
Our reception is open 24 hours, which is ideal for pilgrims arriving late or starting early for Kedarnath. Please share your travel timing when booking and we will keep your room ready.
Do you provide food and meals?
Yes, we serve home-style vegetarian meals and breakfast is available. Hot water and room service are provided so you can rest comfortably before and after your trek.
Is parking available at the hotel?
Yes, we offer free parking for guests arriving by car or taxi, along with free Wi-Fi and 24-hour power backup.
Is mobile network and an ATM available in Guptkashi?
Guptkashi has mobile network coverage and ATMs, so it is a good place to withdraw cash and make calls before heading up to Kedarnath, where connectivity is limited. We recommend carrying enough cash for the trek, as ATMs are scarce beyond Guptkashi.
Do you have rooms for families and large groups?
Yes. We have Deluxe and Standard rooms suited to couples, families and pilgrim groups, and we can arrange multiple rooms together for larger parties. Tell us your group size when booking and we will do our best to keep everyone close.
How do I book a room at Shree Kedarlingam?
The fastest way is to call or WhatsApp us directly — we confirm availability and tariff on the spot. You can also send an enquiry through the contact page and we will get back to you shortly.
